“But justice will not be served by Israel seeking revenge by imposing collective punishment, or committing other violations of Palestinians’ rights. Rather, the Israeli authorities must conduct a full, thorough and impartial investigation that leads to the prosecution of those suspected of being responsible in fair trials.”<\/p>\n

As often attributed to Gandhi: “An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind”. These terrible actions should not be an excuse for curbs on rights.
“Militant groups in Gaza have also fired at least 18 rockets into southern Israel; so far no injuries have been reported.” that is actually NOT true, they fired rockets aimed at Tel Aviv, a huge city with millions of civilians. I know because i actually was there, and we had to run to the bomb shelter. So who is imposing collective punishment?
Hi Leah, thanks for sharing your insight; I hope you and Ruth don’t mind me jumping in here. The situation there sounds dreadful for everyone involved, as you attested to yourself. The situation is very fluid I presume, and it sounds like things have changed since the AI article was written- perhaps it’s worth getting in touch with the author or editor and suggesting that they update it?
The article was responding to a concern that there would be indiscriminate or collective punishment with the human rights abuses that that can entail; rather than the justice of making those responsible accountable for the terrible thing that they did.
As ever Amnesty International is and should be apolitical- the main focus is on protecting human right wherever that is needed.
